Jackson appears in court on Friday

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The trial of a Delta County man accused of murdering a 22-year-old woman has been postponed.

ln July of 2023, Tavaris Lee Jackson was arrested in connection with the murder of Harley Corwin. Jackson, who was 32 years old at the time, faces charges of open murder, felony possession of a firearm at the time of the murder, and assault intentionally causing the death of Corwin’s unborn fetus.

Jackson was originally scheduled to stand trial in August of 2024. However, his defense was granted a stay of proceedings as they waited for a response to an interlocutory appeal from the Court of Appeals. The trial was then rescheduled to begin on January 13, 2025.

Now, the trial has once again been delayed. According to the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, the delay is due to a pending appeal.

“Defendant Jackson is appealing a Court ruling to limit cross examination to what is pertinent to the case at hand,” Press Secretary Danny Wimmer told WZMQ 19. “The trial is stayed by order of the Court pending the outcome of this appeal and the previously scheduled trial date of January 13th has been removed from the docket. This Department’s first brief in the appeal will be filed in accordance with a January 13th deadline set by the Court.”

In a win for motorists and wildlife alike, MDOT has secured a grant from The Federal Government to fund a wildlife crossing analysis throughout the state. The goal is to identify the most problematic wildlife crossing points that pose a risk to motorists as well as wildlife. MDOT has been awarded nearly a half million dollars for the study, which will identify the 20 hotspots on Michigan roads that see the highest number of collisions with wildlife.
